Top 10 Health Tips

1) Don’t smoke, and discourage your friends and family from smoking. Tobacco smoke is the number one cause of avoidable ill health.

2) Aim to eat 5 helpings of fruit and vegetables a day, lots of fibre and cut down on fatty foods and products rich in sugar and salt.

2) Get active, keep fit. 30 minutes of moderate physical activity (enough to make you mildly breathless) 5 days a week is enough.

4) Protect yourself against infections. Get the flu jab if you’re over 65 or have a chest or heart condition. And make sure your children are up to date with their jabs.

5) Drink alcohol in moderation. Enjoy 2-3 units a day, but don’t get drunk; and don’t let alcohol take over your life.

6) Don’t ignore changes in your body - speak to your doctor.

7) Turn-up for routine appointments for breast and cervical cancer screening.

8) Become an expert patient. If you have a long-term condition, such as diabetes or heart disease, then you are your own best physician.

9) Keep warm in winter. There’s money available to help you to stay warm.

10) It’s good for your health to have friends and an active social life - don’t be a couch potato, get out and get involved.
